Department of Retirement Systems for State of Washington
Website redesign and rebuild

About DRS
The Department of Retirement Systems for the state of Washington serves a diverse population of more than 330,000 Washington state public employees, including firefighters, teachers and police officers.
Challenge & Solution
DRS administers one of the most complex public retirement systems in the country, comprising 15 plans across eight individual retirement systems. The two largest challenges facing users of the website were the ability to successfully navigate and search the vast amount of retirement information on the website.
I worked closely with the DRS Communications team and a WordPress development partner to lead the strategy and creative for this website redesign. The approach included a content audit and functional needs assessment, which guided defining the project goals. These informed the foundation for a revised information architecture, content migration planning, and design concepts. The updated website launched with improved navigation, enhanced search using Swiftype, financial calculators, responsive tables, customized illustrations, and personalization through self-identification, serving targeted content its audiences.
Results
The updated website launched in the fall of 2021. The improved navigation and search has resulted in an increase in website session duration and a reduced total number of inquiries to the DRS call center.
