About AFA

The Air Force Association (AFA) is a non-profit professional military and aerospace education association made up of over 90,000 members. The organization promotes American aerospace power, runs the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, and conducts social networking, public outreach, and national conferences and symposia. It sponsors professional development seminars and has a scholarship program for Air Force active duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve members and their dependents. It also provides grants to promote science and math education at the elementary and secondary school level.

Challenge & Solution

The AFA’s website lacked a clear sense of hierarchy and had volumes of content that was outdated and needed to be purged. I worked with the AFA team though a discovery process to define goals and user personas leading to the creation of an updated information architecture. My team redesigned the user interface design and lead the front end development. Hosted on Adobe, we worked with an AEM partner for the back end implementation.

In 2022, I worked with the AFA team to migrate the website to Drupal and its chapter sites to a Drupal multisite platform. The AFA also rebranded at this time to the Air & Space Forces Association, and still keeps intact a majority of the original redesign and navigation.

Results

The updated website offers a streamlined navigation and modern interface, and allowing for a vastly improved user experience, resulting in a higher volume of visitors and an increased session duration.
