About Heifer International

Heifer International (Heifer) is a global nonprofit working to eradicate poverty and hunger through sustainable, values-based holistic community development. The organization distributes animals, along with agricultural and values-based training, to families in need around the world as a means of providing self-sufficiency. Recipients must agree to “pass on the gift” by donating animal offspring, as well as sharing the skills and knowledge of animal husbandry and agricultural training with other impoverished families in the community.

Challenge & Solution

Heifer has been publishing World Ark magazine continuously since 1994. Understanding that audiences were moving increasingly toward digital platforms, Heifer was challenged with finding new ways to connect with current and new supporters as part of its mission to end poverty. My team worked with the editorial and publishing team at Heifer to design and develop the mobile publication app for World Ark. The new app included interactive slideshows, book reviews, videos, and inspirational stories about the organization and its supporters. It also featured exclusive extras for Heifer’s online catalog of animal gifts.

Results

The World Ark app was released for Apple iPads and Android-powered tablets, allowing for an expanded global audience of users to interact with the stories, photos, infographics, and videos like never before. Heifer is the first development nonprofit to create a digital publication of this type. Its release resulted in a global increase of content consumption, as well as increased sales from its holiday gift catalog.
